Next in my series of Folksy Celebrities is the talented Amy Orange Juice! Not only is her glass art fab (so fab I bought some while searching for images to use!) but she's also a tremendous writer and fellow columnist for the Folksy Blog!
Name: Amy McCarthy
From: Exeter, via Norwich and London
Occupation: I am a glass artist and mixed media artist
Favourite colour: oh no, you cant ask a glass artist that! I like them all, but I cant wear yellow, makes me look ill.
Favourite animal: giraffe
Favourite band: today its 2 Door Cinema Club, yesterday it was Mumford and Sons, tomorrow, who knows!
Favourite book: To Kill a Mocking Bird
Shop / Business name:
amyorangejuice
What you make:
stained glass windows, panels and window decorations readymade and for commission
How did you know you were crafty / artistic?
Prolific out put of art in all mediums since I could hold a pen!
What was the first thing you ever made?
No idea, I did have a full collection of Sindy clothes very early on though.
Do you have any formal training or who taught you what you know?
Yes I have an A level in Textiles, an Art degree and 2 years stained glass techniques training.
Where and when do you do your crafting?
I work around my young family, so often 6am-9am and 6pm until I drop and all weekend ......but as of September I am going to employ a childminder as I have reached the point I need to have a couple of days without disruptions and my business is expanding faster than my family is growing up!
Tell me something surprising about yourself:
I have so many cuts on my finger tips from glass that I would find itvery hard to get through USA border controls finger print screening
Which Folksy / Etsy shop can you not get enough of?
Rockrose jewellery, Lynwood crafts and Beargraphics, sorry I cant get it down to just the one!
Tell me something surprising about yourself:
I find that I am just miserable if I am not making and creating, so it is essential to my emotional well being. On a wider scale I really want people to buy less good quality stuff than the endless cheap throw away rubbish. For the good of the environment, aesthetics and maintaining the British tradition of high quality products.......I could go on all night!
Tell me why I should buy something from you!
Because I make beautiful pieces of affordable art which will last a lifetime and make you smile!
Ok you’ve got me convinced! Where can I find you?
